Hello Everyone!

We are new to raising chickens but are placing our first order for chicks tomorrow. We are going to be purchasing 5 EE pullets for our first flock but we may be splitting an order so we will end up with 3 pullets. We are going to be building a chicken tractor approximately 8 feet x 8 feet enclosed and surrounded in chain link fence. The double fencing should keep predators out from my understanding.

A good friend of ours previously kept only EEs and I used to love being around them. They have such a sweet disposition and beautiful eggs!

If there are other city chicken farmers local or otherwise, we would love to hear from them.

Hello and :welcome

Sounds like a good plan for your coop, and best of luck raising your chickens! You can find other chook folks in your area if you find your state's thread in Where am I, where are you.
Don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have, and enjoy the site. :D

@fierlin I will definitely be looking into the threads for my state.

@southernchicka my husband-to-be loves them, so we might add a few at a later date :) I do appreciate the suggestion!

I have our first update!

We order 8 EE females from http://www.carterslegacyfarms.com/ out of Loxley, AL. I emailed Scott back and forth about the safety of shipping such a small order, because we have a 5 chicken limit I can't really order 15 and have the extras. Scott was super friendly and very informative. They will ship in quantities smaller than 15 but it voids the warranty.

So far, we have only invested $50.00 for the brooder and chicks/shipping of chicks. We will be building the coop primarily from recycled lumber and materials. We are lucky to have the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store and the Green Project close by to pick up supplies, but i think our biggest expense will be the wire to cover the coop/run. We have 4 dogs and 2 of them have a higher prey drive due to being shepherds. My great dane and little pug are really good with small creatures, but we plan to introduce them to the chicks at a distance until they are used to having them around.

Hooray! Now all we have to do is wait for them to arrive!
