New Chicken Owner...

Thread Starter

I had chickens as a child, but of course my parents managed the flock back then, so I consider myself new to raising chickens and managing a flock.

I got interested in chickens again because I've been buying local eggs for quite a while. The seed was planted one week when our local supplier had an egg shortage so we didn't get ours. My wife and I casually commented that maybe we should get our own chickens, and the rest is history.

I got most of my chicks from a local preschool that was incubating eggs in their classroom.  They got the eggs from a local "breeder", so what I have is a flock of true backyard chickens; a few easter eggers/amerecauna-ish birds, a couple dominique/cuckoo marans mix, I just gave away a few roosters that had some black australorp features, and 3 bantams that were quite unique.  The bantams were quite the characters and hard to give up, but 2 of the 3 were roosters, and I'm not ready for that yet.  I also have 5 RIR pullets that I bought at the local feed store.  My flock is (give or take a few days) 8 weeks old, as of May 26. We currently have 11 birds.

I found BYC via google when I was researching chickens, and I've been lurking for a few months. There is a wealth of information here; it's a wonderful place, so I figured that it was time to join.

My other hobbies include camping, fishing, and woodworking.  I also do quite a bit of remodeling on our old house, which is a love/hate kind of hobby.

We live on a beautiful homestead in Kansas.  We have lots of bantams and standards (many breeds including: EEs, BOs, Speckled Sussexes, Delawares, Silkies, d'Uccles, Cochins, A few home hatched mixes, OEG bantams, and a couple undetermined).  We also have five goats (mixed origin), one dexter heifer, two pigs, and nine ducks.  Life couldn't be much better.

Helen: Daria, do you have to look at everything in such a negative light?

Daria: Could you possibly be referring to the harsh light of reality?
