What did you do in the garden today?

Today I am watching my garden slowly dissappear under the water. If the rain lets up I will put a pump out there. I have sunflowers out there that are almost 13 feet tall and they are having a hard time. I used to sit in the house, watch this happen and get really mad (understatement), now that I am older I just wait for it stop and assess the damage. Andrea is still in the Gulf and not even here yet:(

We've been lucky enough to only get the quantity of rain required to deep water, not flood, in this area. I have all flowers and veggies in the ground now. I might go grab one of those cheap 6 packs of annuals for the side of the coop though.

Cleared out the drainage ditch to prevent flooding, put fertilizers out, and crossed my fingers hoping for the best! Moved all the potted plants to the porch hoping they will do ok. Watched the rain flood most of my yard :(

For all you folks being affected by this Storm and rain and flooding... my heart goes out to you all. I cringe when I think about dealing with all that...

I hope your losses are not too much and ya all can recoop and replant your gardens:)

OOps forgot to write what I did in my garden... Its not much I just built some more Potato towers.Measured out for some raised beds. The rocks just keep multiplying over nite.. So Ive decided to rise above them :)

I am trying something with my potatoes this year that I read about on the maine cooperative extension. You plant the potatoes in a trench 1' down. As it grows, you sprinkle more dirt on it. By fall harvest it's a 1' ridge with just a little greenery showing. Because you sprinkled the dirt instead of packing, it's suppose to be easier to harvest. I stuck some gladiolas between the rows for some color.

Getting ready to go on vacation. Hoping my garden survives the coming 90°+ weather while I'm gone so I still have a garden when I get home. Trying out some watering bottles. Drilling small holes in the lids of 2liter coke bottles, filling them with water, and inserting them in the soil beneath my toms and squash. Fingers crossed.

Staked all the peppers, something like 40 of them lol. Weeded and picked about a million caterpillars off my plants. Blasted things ate myentire crop of swiss chard! Fed the fat little things to my chicks too. Served them right! :)

I am planning to take the kids out to pick pea pods today. We have week old chicks that we will take to the garden too. It is the first time that they have been outside. There are only 6 of them so my kids will keep an eye on them.

Need to check to see if the tomatoes need to be tied up. They are growing in cages but growing so quickly that it is impossible to contain them.

I re-tilled 2 rows of corn, where my chickens had gone in and ate almost all of it down to the ground! I guess next time I do corn, I'll put something around it.
