What did you do in the garden today?

I've thought about that. You mean a dead mouse you caught in a snap trap?

In Michigan? :frow It'll be morel time in a couple weeks.
Yes, we don't use baits or poisons and only mice caught in the garden/barn/coop are fed to the hens. Nothing that has been caught in the garage or shop as they could be eating who knows what that is poisonous.

I took the Silkie "friend" back to her mama since I have new chicks to befriend the lone chick who was abandoned by her mum. I also had a lone Marans cross that hatched in the incubator today.

I got a new brooder pen from Amazon for just over $20. Set it up in the dining room so it is out of the way and safe from dogs and bunny. DH is bound to notice it but let's hope he doesn't realize the chick count went from 2 to 7. 😂 Luckily they are all currently hiding under the MHP.

Could just say you hatched triplets instead of the one? 😂

Done nothing but work outside all day, in the howling winds and pollen.
My sinus' started the day aching to the point of my ears aching. I forced myself to go to Menards to get a shelf for the shop and stuff for a new mailbox and post, plus a stop at culligan, and the county dump to drop off old tires.
Blew out the workshop and displaced several mice from the horizontal drain. They had set up a village in there. Now it's clean and full of traps.
The amount of ick I ended up wearing and breathing, sigh. Even masked ...icky icky icky.
The hens got to go out for the first time since the beginning of March. They were happy.
They managed 19 eggs from 22 hens. My two oldest don't lay anymore, and one has a tumor, so 19 from 19 layers.
The mailbox post is up and the concrete is drying.
The old box is down and I'll take down the post tomorrow and move the dirt pile with the tractor while I'm out there.
And yet, I feel like I did nothing today.
Heading for 31 tonight or a little lower. Everything in the hoophouse is covered, just in case.

This little chick has totally imprinted on me. She is around 2 weeks old, I think? She was abandoned by her mama and I rescued her. A few days ago I swiped a Silkie chick of similar age so she wouldn't be lonely. When I got the new chicks today I took the Silkie chick back to her mama. I figured the abandoned chick would bond with the new chicks but she doesn't seem interested in them at all. She cries nonstop unless I pick her up. Hmm... She is so cute but I can't be with her 24x7...

We do the same for a family fish fry.. but had no electricity or running water so that made it hard to preserve more than some vegetables by home canning with root vegetables buried in wet sand in the cellar, some smoked meat hangin in the smokehouse, salt cured pork and venison mostly.. I’m ready to go back to those times... most aren’t.. but soon we all will..

you are lucky you know how to preserve food. I tried to air dry carrots and after a few days they got mold. maybe I should sun dry them?

Wooohooo! Go you! I have 3 leghorn (home hatched so we're hoping for pullets), 2 midnight majesty marans, and an easter egger chick in my bath tub right now. AND 12 easter egger eggs in the incubator. So not supposed to have so many chickens and I feel as free as a naked toddler running from the parents!

leghorn cockerels at 2 weeks already have huge combs.

Sueby, my husband had back surgery 10+ years ago. His alternative was that or paralysis, I’m happy he chose the former. He said his recovery was easier than when he had to have his ankle repaired. While he has good days and bad, overall his quality of life is better now than it was before. I wish you the best!
Thank you. I hope you held off the migraine! ❤️

Well if they just stay under the heat every time he walks by he'll never know!

They were happy hens! I had 9 of 9 eggs the day after I let mine out too. :lau

Showers today. My newly planted grass patch needs it, the hose doesn't reach out there. Need to get the starts out. Got some scallions & some sage in the ground yesterday. Dill seeds planted. I cleaned up last years Morning Glory vines & stuck the seeds in the ground & watered. Stuck a couple more bush beans in the dirt under the plexiglass, all the pole beans are up. Now we just need warm, but it's not happening this week, 30s in the forecast. :barnie
