Hi. I am part of a family of five. 3 kids. Nearly 10 year year old twins and an 11 year old.
We started with Chickens about a year and a half a ago. We lost a few to Hawks and some to foxes or dogs.
Then we had a blissful period of no loses.
We bought more chickens - weeks off laying and then we were back to 13 chickens. More attacks more loses and more crying and funerals (I'm sure others with children no what I mean:{ )
We live on 12 Ac - five are cleared - for my three horses. No dogs - our 14 year old English Bulldog died last year and our barn cat was taken, I guess by what ever was taking the chickens. So it's been a bit of a sad year for us.
We are homeschooling all children for the first time this year - and in the process of trying to copy a coop like "Cluckingham Palace" and we have built 20' x 10 foot run - both to be separately mobile - for predator breeder season. I will put our design up - if it ever gets finished. I also lost our favorite chicken last night - she survived the first attack three weeks ago but this attack left her too badly wounded. Yes I talk a lot.

Hello and welcome to BYC

Sorry to hear about your losses.

Welcome to you and your family. I totally understand the heartbreak loosing one of your girls causes and our girls say to tell you they are sorry to hear about your losses too. Our sweet Henrietta (Barnvelder) has had the horror of witnessing 2 terrible attacks. The first, a badger, took little Georgina and the second, by a neighbour's dog, took her best friend Alice, The first was nature, sadly. The second was due to the lack of attention to dog and garden fence by owner. Darned thing had been getting out for 4 years, despite the owner being told, and nearly causing road accidents, having a go at other dogs and growling at children. It has lovely white teeth, I got up close and personal last year when trying to get it off the road. This time I got the Police involved. The threat of legal action and a criminal record seem, so far, to have done the trick.

Henrietta now has 2 new sisters, Daisy (who we should have named Houdini - and I have the scars to prove it, caused when recapturing her!) who is a Marsh Daisy x Columbian Brahma Bantam and Clementine, a Citrus Campine. She's once again a happy girl, although her experiences have stopped her laying, but that's not important. What is important is that she is happy and so are her sisters. They also have 5 cats to keep them amused; not sure whether watching the cats entertaining the hens or the hens reactions to the cats is the funnier. Either way, we get entertained all around!
