I had problems with feather pecking on the chest of my smallest hen when we first got her and I tried tsc brand blue coat. It didn't work at all to prevent pecking, they just pulled the pin feathers off. Fortunately, in her case the feather pecking, while severe, never escalated to blood drawing so I had a little time to sort things out.

Now I have a hen whose vent is getting pecked. There is blood so she's hanging out in a dog crate in my guest room which feels wrong on several levels. I'd like to get her back with the other girls, but not if they are going to peck her to death. Blue coat has been pretty strongly recommended to me, so the plan is to let her hang out in the house until the others roost, spray her butt and return her to the flock. She'll have been gone less than 24 hours so reintroduction shouldn't be a big issue. I'm more concerned about the product not being effective and my hen getting seriously injured.

Blue Kote, as far as I know, is an antiseptic anesthetic type solution, not for picking. I've never known it to be good for that. In fact, don't get it on you or you'll be a Smurf for a long time, LOL.

Here is the write up on it:

i didn't vote on your poll because i've never used it for that purpose - but - i am a huge fan of blu-kote. it worked great for my bird that had been attacked by my dog. it helped the wound AND it kept the others from pecking.

The first time I used it I got it all over my hands. Luckily, I teach young children so everyone assumed it was an art project. I just don't want to reintroduce my hen too early. It sounds like it might not be a bad idea to give her a couple more days and then try it.

I tried it for pecking as my girls were pecking my White Rock roosters butt to no end. (no pun meant) It worked for all about an hour, after that I could easily see who were the major pains in the butt. Literally, as their beaks were blue.I think they were confused by the blue/purple color for a bit. So no not for pecking issues.

Like speckledhen says, be prepared to have it on your skin for at least a week and on clothes pretty much forever.

Nope none of that junk works for pecking feathers. You gotta find the culprit & rearrange your pecking order. Isolate them one at a time to fixes the problem. I had this problem for over a year & ended up killing my Roo he would pick their feathers & feed them back to the girls. The flock caught on & everybody was pecking each other. It was a freaking nightmare. I also increased their protein intake to help grow their feathers back. But don't overdue the protein. I fixed the flock but its a tough battle.

i use wound kote blue lotion and it worked for the chicks. my delaware chicks like stripping the feathers off my black cubalayas. i spray it on and it keeps them from pecking and helps regrowth of feathers. it did not help a young hen from being pecked bloody by an older hen.

Im wondering what you did to stop your hens from pecking your Roo? Im having this issue right now
