Size for brooder?

I'm just starting out but wondered about the comment that you will separate the chicks from the hen, won't they get up under her and she can keep them warm or will she go up on roost and leave them?

I would think a hen that sat on the eggs would do that but you can't just stick some chicks in an have her do that.
 
My oldest sister has had chickens for years. She waits till she has a broodie hen asleep at nite, then any biddies that she ordered sticks under her. Next morning she wakes up and is ecstatic that her chicks hatched and she raises them no problem.
 
My chicks are 2 weeks old, and I am worried that I will soon need a bigger brooder. I have 27 chicks in a 4'x4' box with 18" walls. I have placed window screens over the brooder, as I fear they will 'fly' out! The brooder is in the coop. Can I let them 'loose' in the coop, or do they need to remain confined in the small space for a specific length of time? Will they be warm enough and be able to find the heat lamp if they are 'loose' in the coop. The coop is ready for chicks but I don't have the door yet for the outdoor run.
