I just got some new ducks. I was told by the person I got them from that they are Magpies. Do they look like call ducks to you and if so what colors are they? The top tan and white one is the hen, the blue/fawn one is the drake. Also, if bred what colors can I expect from this pair? Are they standard colors?

Thank You!

They aren't true standard colors, but appear to be from a mixed flock of calls more than likely. They will throw a mixed bag of ducklings if you hatch their eggs. Both are lovely pet quality ducks though, very interesting color on the second. No obvious drake curl on either of their tails, does one QUACK and the other kinda mumble or go whasp?

The top one is the hen the bottom one is the drake, I have seen them breed and I have gotten two eggs from her. I have them in my incubator now and they are developing. Is it common for them to not lay often, I have read they just kind of lay when they want to. She laid two eggs and then no more. And Thank you.

Could they be chocolate magpies? Thats what i would call them but like CelticOaksFarm said, probably a mix

Is there a call duck thread on BYC?

I was thinking he was a chocolate/blue magpie and she maybe an apricot? Of the standard colors those are the ones they seemed to match the best to me.

Calls breed each spring then molt and regrow feathers to reared the following spring. Odd laying of just a few eggs right now can be normal if she is young, or they are about to molt.

There is a CD thread, search at the top Bantam duck thread, call duck thread. If Kevin sees this maybe she can chime in on the threads also.

The bottom one is a blue magpie call duck with rust and the top is a buff magpie or a light chocolate magpie call or they could both be highly marked Ancona calls withe same colors I said before as rust is more common in anconas. This was posted a long time ago but whatever.
