Feeding birds rice and oats?

I have access to a lot of rice and oats. I can get enough to cheaply feed my meat birds and my pullets 1-2 times a day with rice and or oats. Is this a good idea? I cook the rice and let it cool, and they love it. I sprinkle the oats around and they go crazy. Are the birds getting good nutrition? Will this help them build good muscle mass? Does anyone else feed birds rice?

If they have access to free range plants and insects and have the ability to 'balance' their diets, they may survive on such a diet. A more balanced ration would provide better health, egg production, and more efficient growth.

I read where you can feed up to half oats.
The old guys say oats are chicken feed.

I would add another grain in there if I could find a cheep one. We feed the screenings of the grains that we grow to all of our chickens. They seem very healthy.

I'd feed it to them as the bulk of their diet as long as they either free range or you feed a little of something else.
