Rooster flogging

I recently acquired a BR rooster which my daughter promptly named Roostie. After a very tragic loss of all our older chickens, we had no protection for our 2 babies that were inside under the heat lamp when the massacre happened. For some reason, Roostie went right after my 5 year old...puffed out his feathers and hopped in the air and started kicking at her. I panicked and smacked him in the head with my hand. And then he went after her again, so I smacked him again. We haven't had a problem since. Now my daughter can pick him up, chase him around and love on him. Roostie is already very protective of our silkie hen and our maran roo/hen(not sure on sex). I'm new to chickening so I'm sure this wasn't the appropriate way to address him, but protecting my little hen was more important than being PC with my new roo.

Thanks for your response. We have tried a new technique and it seems to have helped the situation. Rusty does not follow me like he used to and if he does, he keeps his distance. I am relieved for now. I just don't know how long it will last. I feared going out to the backyard because of his aggressive behavior. But he doesn't do that to my husband or to my mother-in-law. He did do the wing dance to my daughter-in-law's mother when she came to visit.
