When you first collect an egg, how do you know if it's fertile?

I don't candle until after 5 days of incubation when veining is quite apparent. Do you plan on incubating other eggs as well, or just this one? Have you ever incubated an egg before?

I will state outright that I am a newbie, so please excuse any newbie things I might do.

I have thirteen eggs in my incubator I put in 3 days ago. Yes, it is my first time. I have tried candling them and eleven has a bunch of spots, it seems, while two have a large black spot "swimming" in it. I guess perhaps it was too early to tell anything?

Title says all. Can you candle it?
watch the rooster and see if it jumps on the hen's back. You will know he is doing his job and the eggs are most likely fertilized. You will also notice that the hens are missing feathers in the center of their backs. You can also do what the professionals do: candle them! Hold the eggs up to a strong light. With practice you can tell by finding the white spot on the yolk. Fertilized eggs will have a clearly defined bulls eye, unfertilized the spot will have a fuzzy look to it.

Thanks for the pictures! Do I have to wait 24 hours to let the yolk settle? I read you had to do that in a book.

If you are setting shipped eggs definantly yes. But I usually dont if they are from my own hens. Wait till day seven before throwing any eggs out unless you see a blood ring.. If any are still clear then you can be sure they will not develop. Not all eggs are easy to see through when candling. I have broken a few that I thought were duds to find that they were slow in starting to develop.
