Buff Orpington Rooster? Please Help!!

What if you had what you thought was a buff orp pullet, and it started crowing all of a sudden 5 times for the first time ever one morning and didn't crow again all day or that evening?

I'm waiting to see what happens tomorrow. First time it happened today ever.

I'm going to take pics tomorrow in the sunlight and see if anyone can help me determine if it's just a uber dominant hen or a rooster.

As far as I know, I've found BO feathers in the nest box, but haven't seen her sit. I know my White Leghorn lays and now I've found the RIR in the box, and brown eggs showed up later that week, which I thought were from the BO, but now I know the eggs came from the RIR and have no clue what the BO is now.

Thanks for all the help for us newbs. Great forum y'all have.

If it's that young you're just now expecting eggs, it's a rooster. Yes, hens can crow, but not pullets this young. Young crowing birds are roosters.

Here's a few pics of the bird in question. From what I've been reading and looking at the feathers in the pictures more objectively, I'm more inclined to believe you are right that it is a rooster.

I think I was hoping I was wrong and took a bit to convince myself because I believed he was a she for the last few months we've had him. She, now He was the most curious-natured and most tame of the three. Unfortunately, we can't have roosters in our city limits, so something will have to change.

Again, thanks for all of this knowledge to be found in one place. I can feel the expertise around me.

Any comments are welcome.

Yes, that's a rooster, and it's not a pure Orpington. The color is off, the body shape is wrong and the leg color is wrong. Can't really tell what it is without a profile shot, but it looks more like a mix with a hatchery red bird.

Dang it. Gumbo it is. Weather's gettin' cold anyway next week. Thanks from deep down in Cajun Country.

I have BO's and the roo's start to crow about 1/2 hr before sun is completely up. It usually only lasts until I let them out of the coop. Every now and then the crowing will last a little longer depending on how much he feels he needs to say.
