I recently acquired a book from the late 1800s, filled to the gills with fascinating information of the time. In the profile of the breeds of poultry, it had a section on crested turkeys, with an excellent drawing. It said that they were kept only for exhibition, and that one had had been exhibited at a New York poultry show a few years before the book was written. The bird looked exactly like the American wild turkey, except that it had a tuft on it's head, which could be white or black. The birds didn't always have crested offspring. If there are any turkey breeders who know something about this, I would love to hear. Thanks!

That's really interesting.... I saw the Smithsonian picture in my research, but didn't see the one here on the forum. It must be a genetic mutation. It's interesting that it can be bred for. People must start breeding for them again!

I can't imagine any unadorned tom not relishing that sort of target when sparring commenced.
