Hi, pretty sure my seven month old rir has sour crop, she was fine last night then this morning v lethargic and shaking.
I spoke to a vet after my chicken was sick and brown fowl smelling liquid came out! The vet said it sounds like sour crop and wanted me to take her in for her crop to be emptied but I knew that would stress her so I emptied it myself by holding her upside down and massaging it all out. I've done that four times now and each time more came out.
What do I do now? I'm keeping her in the house tonight and have given her a boiled egg mashed with water and just plain water to drink, should I give her her layers pellets ? And am I meant to give her yoghurt ? And apple cider vinegar? Please help I don't know what I'm doing! What do I do to cure her? Does she need medicine? Should I take her to a vet?
Thanks in advance

As a parrot owner, not a chicken owner yet but soon
Vet take her in, she needs meds.
when my parrots get yeast infection, I have the meds on hand.
with a parrot I think that some inform might be the same
Keep the bird warm and cover the box with a blanket,to reduce stress.when taking the bird to the vet cover the carrier again to reduce stress.
when you empty the crop,I give my parrots pedolite (not spelled right) for kids
but before anything get the bird warm before you give it any thing to eat or drink.find out what temp is right for your sick bird.
please take her to the vet.

You might want to continue to talk to your vet. Ask the vet if he has some sort of anti-fungal that he would give. I am no expert. I did have a chicken with a sour crop and I treated her with Monistat suppositories. There is a thread, "I cured my chicken with Monistat". But, since you are already working with a vet, see what he would prescribe!!! Wish you the best!!!

What does her crop feel like? Is it all liquidy or can you also feel a hard mass? How long has it been like this and does it ever empty on its own? What are you currently feeding her?

Hi I'm feeding her layers pellets mashed with benecol yoghurt drink and water with cider vinegar from the horse supplies shop ( they recommended the benecol) I spoke to a vet and she recommended berels friendly bacteria but I can't get any around here! And the vet said give her the apple cider vinegar in the water and don't empty the crop til this evening so as to let it sit in there a while. She said anti fungal meds are not usually prescribed as should not really be needed. The crop is sloshy no hard mass that I can feel and she is poohing, thou not as much as usual, she has hardly eaten today and not drank much thou she drank a mugful of clean water(no acv) through the night.
I'm very worried, should I feed her something else if she's not eating the mashed feed? Scrambled egg maybe? Shoul I be putting grit in for her at the moment? She's in a small cage in the house. Thanks

Hi I want to try the monistat thing but we don't get monistat here in the uk! What exactly is it? Is it thrush med? We have caniston is this the same? It's suppositories for thrush?

Canesten I think it should be spelt! Anyway just realised I have fluconazole capsules in my cupboard which were prescribed by the doctor for thrush(sorry to much info I know!) but can I give her those?

Monistat is just an over the counter yeast infection treatment for ladies..err..girlie bits. I googled thrush because I have never heard of that before and I believe it is a yeast infection of the mouth and throat? Not completely sure but sounds like its in the same family if not the same thing. A treatment for that would be very similar. I have not tried this treatment method myself but I believe the idea is that the bacteria in the crop is off and you want to try to right it.

Scrambled eggs would be great. Also, I know people give yogurt which also has healthy bacteria. I would avoid grit as that will not help this problem and she will be fine without eating any for a short period of time while she gets well. Keep in mind that the ACV is very acidic so I would not give her too much and have it build up in there.

Waiting a bit and observing how it goes seems like a good plan. You do not want to vomit her if you don't have to because fluid can get in her lungs.

Good luck! Keep us posted.

Yes thrush is the same (girls parts!) I'm just not sure about dose I have capsules 150mg.
How do you give the suppositories ? Crushed in water? Wonder if I can mix fluconazole with water and give her, they are a one off treatment so maybe I should give her half a capsule ? Should I squirt it into her mouth? She's not eating now so going to do scrambled egg.
