I hope this is the correct forum for this question. I've heard you can hang a head of cabbage in the coop to entertain the chickens. We'll be out of town for one day and our son's dog will be in the backyard where the chickens normally roam. I would like to hang a couple of heads of cabbage to entertain the girls since they will be in the coop while we're gone so we're not worried that the dog will kill any of the chickens. I'm not sure how the best method for hanging the cabbage would be, any ideas? TIA!

Sorry, I have personally never tried to entertain chickens in that way before.
Good Luck

I did it twice and it was harder then you might think. First I tried to make a net out of string, but as the head got smaller it fell through the net. Then I tried putting a shish kabob spick trough the hard part, but that was knocked off after a little while of them attacking it. So I put the two together and it held longer then either style alone. A full day, but that was when I only 7 birds...

Have access to a hairnet??? Like for cooking or in a food plant?? I imagine that would hold a ball of cabbage... Put it in their, hang it from the cieling... Maybe ill give that a try myself :)

Thank you everyone for your replies; as it turns out, the dog is no longer jumping so we can keep the chickens in the garden area and the dog can be in the yard. Problem solved! But thanks again

Please be carefull when hanging cabbage...I know they love it, & hanging it gives them something to be entertained with for hours but please do not leave them ( for hours/ a weekend )
I went to a chicken chat at the local grange & the avian vet shared a story about a chicken w/ a dislocated wing. The owner left the chicken unsupervised & found the bird tangled in the string & hanging by a wing, Unable to touch the ground, (possibly all day)
Unfortunately by the time they got the poor thing to the vet, it died on the table.
I'm not saying don't do it, just be nearby & keep an eye on them,
We all love our chooks!

I have tried this without any dramas. Having said that I found some great little wire baskets at the $2 shop that work really well. I hang them along a piece of dowel , just at height where they have to stretch their necks. Mine like cauliflower . I wrap the whole thing in foil and pop it in the oven for about 1/2 an hour. Take it out of the foil drop into the basket and presto. When choosing your basket, you want the gaps to be close enough to hold the food but spaced enough for them to get their beaks in for a good foraging . Pumpkin can be softened in the same way. I try anything that is in season. I even hung an Atlantic salmon in one, baked , of course.
