One of my ameracaunas has a sack filled with fluid above her eye. It doesn't seem to bother her and she seems okay but this just came up about 1 week ago. She's 2 years old. Any idea what it is? I can't find anything anywhere. It looks like an inflated part of her comb, but it's not - it's just the same skin type - sort of red like the comb. Any ideas/suggestions/input will be appreciated.

She probably got pecked hard causing the fluid filled sack. I had it happen to one of my Black Stars last year. I wrapped her snugly in a towel and forced her eye open exposing the swollen sack in the top left corner of her left eye. I then used a syringe with a needle and punctured the sack, very little blood and alot of what appeared to be water spewed from the piercing. The swelling went down immediately. I then flushed her eye with saline solution and put neosporin in it for the next 3 days at which time it was completely healed. I then released her from the hospital cage back out with the others with no further incidents. No problems since.

Here is a photo - her eye is actually not involved - it's sort of like her eyelid, but her eye is open and clear, but I think she has a hard time seeing from that side. Thanks for your help..

I'm going to try this - my only thought was that after I drained the sac, she would have this huge flap hanging over her eye. That went away immediately?

might and might not, but the longer its swelled up the longer it takes to have the skin go back to normal. So I would drain it now and keep a close eye on her. You might have to keep draining it for a few days but the skin should go back to normal. Good luck

what ever happened with your Americana and the sack above the eye? My americana hen has one now too and I don't believe she is sick. Just wondering was there any problems with popping it?

Hi, I came across this thread as I have had the same problem with one of my hens. I know it is rather old, but just thought I'd share my results, in case anyone else has this problem in the future. I was probably almost a year ago that my girl's eyelid started to swell and it got quite big. We decided to lance it and then put some lavender essential oil, colloidal silver and honey on it. It looked better and we put her outside again with the other chickens, but within a few weeks it started to swell again and within a month or so was bigger than before. Then I read this thread and decided to try again, this time using antibiotic cream instead of honey. We did, same thing again with lots of clear fluid coming out. The next day it looked swollen again, so I decided to drain it again, but this time no fluid came out and we decided it was just swollen tissue (poor chicken!). A day later we let her out with the others, as it didn't look any different and within a couple of days the swelling went down and now her eyelid looks almost normal, she can definitely see out of it. I'll try to upload some photos, but this is definitely worth a shot if you have the same problem. We drained it by using a boiled razor blade and my husband holding her over the laundry sink. Good luck everyone!

Here is the before photo, it was bigger this time than the first time:

Here it is after, it has shrunk more since then and her eye is now completely visible, I can still tell her apart from the other chickens, though:
