Hi all!

I'm trying to decide if I should order sex'ed meat birds or straight run and had a thought - will the roo's start crowing before their processing date? I'm going to be raising slow growing broilers and plan to grow them out to 10 weeks or so. Not sure if my neighbors will be happy with 15 crowing roosters! Thanks.

It depends. They say that cornish cross will be processed before they crow at 8 weeks. I'm not familiar with slow grow broilers. It can vary even in the same breed. It can start at 4 weeks in some.
I have Jersey Giants and the roos just started crowing. They are 20 weeks old.

I would talk to my neighbors and just be prepared to process earlier if need be.

We raised FR's last spring - they started crowing at 8wks, by 10 wks some were obnoxious. We processed the loudest (and ironically enough largest) - and NOT ONE crowed again for three days! But then, they all started up again.

We raised basic CX last fall - they did not ever crow, and we had 14 cockerals out of 25 chicks. But, we had 7 Black Java cockerals at that point, so they did the majority of the 'talking'. Never did hear a CX crow though, processed them at 10-11wks too. And the 'extra' BJ cockerals too! So things got real quiet again real quick. Whew.

Hope this helps.

I've raised FRs and McMurray's Red Rangers, at about 11 weeks we were getting a little warbling crowing, but not full on crowing. Then we sent them off to freezer camp...
