How long can you have eggs before you incubate them ?

I would not do a test run with one egg for different reasons.

Sometimes an egg just doesn't hatch. If it doesn't develop or hatch, how do you know if most of your eggs are OK? It could just be a fluke.

If you are successful, you then have a lone chick. They are flock animals and really need others around.

Your test will mean a whole lot more if you use a few eggs.

x2 plus a fuller bator always holds temps much better! I had a lone chick, its not a good thing to do. Collect and set is the best advice!
or if you can get "Trader Joes" eggs at the store you can set them with yours?????

I agree one chick would be a bad idea. I'd say go ahead and do an incubator full, in the end you will be happier. Very few people have a total losses when they hatch even the first timers. I had 32 out of the 42 hatch with my first hatch. What do you plan to do with the chicks once they hatch? Do you plan to keep them or sell them? When does winter end in your part of the country if you plan on keeping them? I'm excited for you if you can't tell. I can't do any hatching for a couple of more months due to winter.

One more question, do you have an automatic egg turner or are you turning by hand?

something else
If you don't have a Trader Joe's near you you might have to look into a health food store. My first hatch were eggs that would have ended up in a health food store. You may have to do some checking to see if the producer keeps a rooster.

I have the egg sitting on my automatic egg turner (not incubating) I am going to wait . I want another hen or two(because I have four hens that are laying atm and 2 are banty) but I dont have the space for any more roos so I will end up selling the roos and some hens (all this saying i have a good hatch.) Winter as in freezing temps and stuff ends in tn about march id say , and yes i have automatic egg turner . When i do get enough eggs to incubate I will keep everyone posted on this thread. Thanks
