Hawk attack today. Help identify this one please.

I lost my first hen to a hawk attack today. Nice Easter Egger that laid blue eggs. I came upon this hawk still in my pen eating away. it looked like a young hawk and couldn't get out but stood there looking at me while I was taking pictures.It didnt seem afraid of me at times. And the pen is not topped, yet. Am working on fencing in the chicken run now. This killing is a major mativator. No I didnt kill this hawk if anyone asks.
Anyone have idea what kind it is? I live in NW Georgia.

That's awful to hear about your chicken. I'm in Oklahoma and that hawk looks like one of the typical chicken hawks we have around here. I'm not sure exactly what type of hawk or the correct name, but I've had to spend a lot of time outside with a BB gun and firecrackers to scare away those things.

One thing I did that helped a lot was I took some bright colored material and strung it across the top of the chicken run. Since I hung it loosely the wind could blow it and make it move. This seems to scare away the hawks now. I guess they figure they might not be able to get in. Kind of like those reflective things people put in their gardens to keep away certain birds.

Anyway, ever since I put those things up I haven't had a single hawk try to come down, although I have seen up to 12 in the sky circling on several occasions.

(I found some really cheap straps for securing cargo in a truck bed at a local 'Dollar Tree'. They are 1" wide and extremely bright 'safety' orange. I used 3 of them total.)

I've also found that using little plastic BBs don't kill the hawks but they can still annoy them and keep them away for a short while.

The string has worked the best for me though.

Yes, I agree it is a juvenile red-tailed hawk. It likely was raised farther north and came down for winter. If so it will soon head back north to start looking for a territory to settle into. If lucky it will breed for first time in spring 2014..
 
I've looked at a lot of information online, and I do agree that it is a young red tail. It stood its ground when I confronted it. It tried to get back out of the run, but was too close to the fence while I was there. It spread its wings I guess to frighten me, but didn't attack me and I was really close. I was sorely tempted to kill it but did not and allowed it to fly away. Beautiful bird. As I said before, I do not have a top to my run but will put netting on the top ASAP. The remaining 7 chickens have a secure house and a new run that I enclosed about 3 weeks ago. Yesterday was their first day out of the run free ranging. I guess that the hawk was tempted with fresh chicken wings during the Super Bowl. Sorry bad humor..

I agree it's a young red-tailed. This little Cooper's tried to fly through my glass front door one day -
