According to the Hampton City Ordinance web site (http://library.municode.com/index.aspx?clientId=14532&stateId=46&stateName=Virginia) its still illegal to raise Chickens, unless your coop is 175ft away from a dwelling. Mine is not, because that nearly impossible to do in Hampton. I am only raising 4Hens (No Rooster), and so far my neighbors havent said anything as im finishing building the Coop. Recently, a good friend of mine said that he heard that the Hampton Roads area just passed/updated the ordinance, stating that your allowed to own up to 5 hens!

I know it takes Hampton months to update the Ordinance web-site, so I was wondering if anyone in Southeast VA has heard of this update?? I heard Chesapeake & Portsmouth passed something recently, but I can't find any news articles that specifically mention Hampton. If anyone knows, please fill me in! Thanks!!!

im not sure about owning chickens there, but i used to live around there and i think they have bigger problems then someone owning a few chickens, but where you live close to buckrow beach

Thanks for the Reply! I am definitely fimiliar with the Buckroe area, and your right about "bigger problems". I live in a "little" more peaceful area of Hampton, so hopefully law enforcement stays occupied with dowtown Newport News and Buckroe area.

I know my brother back in Virginia beach has 5 chickens. They are aware it's illegal but the neighbours all know and no one complains. They've tried petitioning to get it changed there. Just as long as there are no roosters I can't imagine a problem.

yea my first apt. when i was 18 was right off Jefferson in newport news, i now live in the sticks of PA

so much better lol

Any luck in finding out about the Hampton ordinance? I heard the City Council discussed the issue last December, but have not seen any outcome.

My real estate agent knew I wanted Chickens and were looking in Hampton. The Code only allows for 4 Hens and you pens must be at least 25 feet from any neighbor (business or residence). I am not clear on the distance from Church or schools as it pertains to residential chickens. I am working on my app as I type this.

Good Luck to all.

You are correct, 4 Hens and Coop must be 25 from a Neighbor, which includes a church and/or school

I live in Hampton, Virginia and in the newspaper a while back or says you may have up to six hens and no roosters. The coop must be at least 175 feet from schools or churches, and a minimum of 25 feet from a dwelling. This is not really part of the code but I say the coop should be at least 10 feet from a water source incase your yard floods like mine.
