broken beaks

About half my girls came to me with what I thought were clipped beaks. I figured left alone they would just grow back. But it's been 6 months and some of the beaks are shorter and worse. They don't seem to be in pain, but what causes this and how can I fix it? Some only have a little nub left. It's really disconcerning...
 
If your birds are rescued birds such as those from the egg producing plants , a cotterised beak or trimmed beak to prevent egg eating. I personally dispise that practice since it is done when they are chicks. I get sick just watching the video I had on it. Just like a construction line. These cotterized beaks do not grow back. Trimmed beaks can grow back somewhat.
If the beaks have splits in them with jagged edges or resembles a fork it would be good to trim it down a bit to help prevent more splitting. If tthis is the case take note of how much calcium your birds are getting. The calcium will help strengthen their beaks .
Just be careful not to trim down too far as the beak will bleed and no fun when that happens but the bleeding will stop. Just have to be careful of cannibalism from other birds. If beak is bleeding separate the hen from the rest untin there is no sign of blood and you can have her join the pack again. Hope this is helpful and ease your mind a bit.... Steve
 
Yes, I too would guess they've been de-beaked. Its common practice for commercial chickens. As the previous post states, if they split more will fall off ir need to be taken off to prevent them from splitting further. Feed them from deep bowls to make it easier for them to eat, same with water. Good luck.
