A couple days ago my girls and I went to the local feed store. I can't recall what we went in for, but we ended up by the chicks and ducklings. As we walked up, one of the employees was holding a chick and looking in the bin for others that needed to be separated. It seems they had been pecking the one she was holding and had a pretty good hole started near it's tail. She told me she was taking it out to put blue-kote on it. Jokingly, I said "or you could just let me put it in my pocket and we'll pretend it was never here". She asked if I was serious because she had 5 more in the back that they pulled out to get them away from the others.
Of course, one daughter was kicking me while the other just kept saying yeah, yeah.
Meanwhile, my brain was saying no, no, no. Somehow, we managed to get out without them.
I told my hubby later, and he was even shocked that I didn't bring them home.
Today we ended up back there so hubby could get blocks for the livestock.
As usual, the girls immediately went to the chick bins to see what was there. We were all shocked to see that there were now 10-12 chicks in there with blue-kote over a good area of their bumms and wings.
I couldn't believe they put them all back in together.
There was one that just stood with it's eyes half closed while the others pecked at it's bleeding tail. I think it had been tormented so bad that it was beyond the point of chirping in pain.
They just had too many in the bin for the size of them.
I was not impressed.
Then my hubby walked by and looked in, and said "are you just gonna let them suffer?" Huh? What? Excuse me??
Here I am, holding my ground even has my heart was sinking while looking at them.. and the hubby "helps" by asking what I was gonna do about it.
And, now I had two puppy dogs and one bull dog giving me the pathetic sad eyed look.
I reminded them that I already have 17 ducks and 13 chickens! I don't need more.
(Now, anyone who is a chicken lover like me, knows that arguing this with yourself does no good.)
As hard as I tried, I just couldn't turn away.
So, I told them to pick out the 6 worst ones (one of which was the one I mentioned above) and I would take them.
I really think they were glad I was willing to take them and give them a chance. They even discounted them more that they originally told me.
I am happy to say, that they seem to be less stressed and resting well in their new surroundings.
I have fingers and toes crossed that the pecking will stop, and they will all make a quick recovery.
Tomorrow I will share some pictures of our little yellow & purple additions.
Maybe someone can even help me figure out what they are.
