Here's the latest, she is my second one in a month to die from ovarian cancer. No sign of illness, just dead under the tree she roosted in.

Good Lord Casportpony!!! I never thought they could get that! Is it from the Marek's or what? Ovarian cancer in humans usually is caused by a herpes virus but I didn't think they affected them the same.

I guess it could be Marek's related, but there was no mention of Merek's in the hen that UC Davis did, they just said carcinoma. I'll post the final necropsy report on her once I edit out my personal info.

I also took some pictures of crop tube placement so people can see just how impossible it is to tube feed down the wrong hole, lol, I'll post those later in a new thread. Maybe someone will learn from her death.

My Mom died from periteneal cancer, same as ovarian , but more rare. I know more about it than any lay person should ever have to know. I guess I never thought it was something that animals of any kind could get but I suppose that the female, no matter the species, can as the parts needed for birth are pretty much the same no matter how they look. Wow, what a wake up. No symptoms at all were there? I am assuming you did the necropsy?

she looks like she has a large percentage of fatty deposits.
How old was this hen? Her liver looks fine, but was it unusually large?

When I did the necropsies on some of my chickens they had very little fat on them. Then again, they had been sick for a while.

I don't think that's just plain ovarian cancer as it goes along the bowels/intestines. It looks like a combination of ovarian cancer and leucosis. With outright leucosis she would have wasted, though. But I haven't heard of ovarian cancer lining the intestines like the pictures show. I've had to eradicate whole gene lines out of my flock due to leucosis. Tried to battle it for too long, all without success, only managed to prolong their suffering.

On a plus note, the healthy yellow fat in such abundance generally is a reliable indicator of good husbandry practices!

I agree. Looks like tumors all over esp the intestines. Maybe it started in the ovaries and spread.
Those are really good pics. I appreciate your posting them.
I should have done mine yesterday, I don't know, sometimes I can and sometimes I can't .

stupid question but could the increase in tumors and cancer in ones flock be caused by hybrids or gmo's? I know that our modified corn doesn't have all the nutrients that some older varieties had, but is this a serious issue we should be watching for?
