How high should my perch be?

A ramp is essential. We have two roosts low one at 12' and the other one at 20" with a ladder in the middle so it is easy for them to jump down. Some of our smaller chickens will jump down to the lower roost then to the floor.
We have a friend that had to redo all her roosts because her large rooster damaged his foot jumping down and died from his injury. Her roosts were around 3' up with no way down but to jump.
Height is not as much a problem if you have chickens that are around 2lbs. But for the larger ones they need some extra help.
We have an Australorp that will wait until the other hens are down until she can get to the ladder and make her way down.
We redid our roosts 5 times do to height or size. Settled on 2x4's laid on the flat side so they can cover their feet when roosting. This really helps for the cold nights.

Put some fake egg and/or golf balls in the nests as bait.
