2 years ago I bought my first batch of Cornish X chicks from Schlects. The first thing I noticed when I opened the box was that the chicks felt super heavy in my hand. They were about the same size as regular chicks, but they felt like they weighed twice as much. They grew well and I was very happy with their quality.

This year I went back to Schlects for my Cornish Xs. I was disappointed when I opened the box and they weren't heavy like the first year. They just felt like regular chicks. The next thing that surprised me as they grew was that some of them were really tiny. There were maybe 12 out of 50 that were much smaller than the others. I know pullets will be slower growing than cockerels, but these were less than half the size of the rest. I wondered if maybe some banties had gotten mixed up in there.

As they've grown they are still less than half the size of the others. They do look like Cornish X, just really small. They're 8 weeks old now. The majority of the chickens will need to be processed in another week. But the small ones are going to need at least two more weeks to size up. Which means I'll need to either process in two batches, or go ahead and process the tiny ones and lose the extra meat. I rent a mobile processing unit from the extension office and only get it for 2 days so this is kind of inconvenient.

I'm wondering if it's just me, or has anyone else ordered from Schlects and noticed this?

I've never had a problem with them (in previous years). I have been really impressed how they free range. I haven't ordered mine yet this year, but will still go with Schlects. I feel bad for your experience, but I'm trying them again. Blaine

I ordered from them a few years ago (ducks). They were nice people and were the only hatchery that had White Mallards. They only had small quantities though.
