Wanted - Chicken Hatching Eggs

What are your plans. Is this a school project? A 4-H project? You want certain breeds but if you do they cost. Most here are quality breeders and take pride in developing high quality breed of chicken. Eggs you are looking for are expensive for that reason. Also if you can not afford to spend that much on hatching eggs, what is your plan to do with the chicks for feed? A bag of chick or chicken feed can run from $15-$20. And do you have a place for them when they get older?

Your best bet to start is getting a barnyard mix of eggs which is usually not that expensive. If you are in MA visit a farm or farmers market ask them if they know of anyone who has eggs for hatching. Make sure though there is a rooster/roosters in with the hens.

I would also do like the others suggested and look or even post on craigslist. Keep it simple though like Looking for fertile hatching eggs. Willing to pay $10 for a doz.

Hope this helps

My plans for the chickens were to keep as pets. The reason I am looking for eggs under $2 is because I don't want to spend money that I don't need to spend on an egg. I have the money, but I'd rather spend it on a good bag of chicken feed instead of a chicken.

Definitely go on Craigslist. I have bought eggs from there. Search both hatching eggs and fertile eggs. Also post in for sale/farm & garden section that you are looking for fertile hatching eggs. Have an organic market or trader joes/whole foods near you? Many people in BYC have bought eggs from both and successfully hatched the eggs. Also do you see any farms around you? Could you try asking them? I understand where your coming from, but I think you have many great options before having to spend money on shipping costs. Save that for the eggs you really want once you get addicted to hatching like the rest of us ;) Best of luck hatching.

You must understand that you are not buying an egg. What you are buying is a potential chicken depending on how good you are with an incubator.

Most shippers ship Priority mail. 2 - 3 days at best. The cost for flat rate is $11 to $15 not including packaging materials and the cost of the eggs themselves.

If as I understand it you have no chickens yet, then you have no need for that bag of feed.

As suggested you may want to look on CL for hatching eggs. You will of course be limited to breeds and you may have to pick them up.

You also could start with chicks and then get your own hatching eggs that way.

I wish you well,

Rancher

I suggest you try the local store for fertilized eggs. They may very well hatch. Or your local farmers market.
