Rat Snakes

We released this one but he kept coming back (or a brother, sister, cousin, or aunt). He found the eggs very tasty!

I'd much rather see a rat snake than this guy. Hubby shot him through the head. He kept the rattle.

Our pet sitter found this one in our coop. She dispatched him with our garden shears.

Welcome to BYC forum.

Wow that is an interesting idea.....yay for geese.

Guineas are also supposed to keep snakes away. Several years ago as I went out to work I heard the neighbors guineas raising cane in my garden. I walked down that way and saw a large Canebreak rattlesnake leaving.

An old cattleman's secret to keeping snakes away is to keep geese.

Snakes hate them and geese will pursue snakes and kill them if they can.

I'm not sure if it will be 100% effective for you at night if the geese are somewhere in the dark.

If the geese are in the same shed as the chicks with the light on you shouldn't be getting any snakes in there.
AH that don't work here i have over 30 geese and they roam 3 ponds at any given time and my dogs kill snakes around the ponds pretty often.
I have seen a water moccasin ,a frog , a turtle and a duck all sunning themselves a couple feet apart on the same bank of one of my ponds, they get along pretty darn good.
My guineas and peafowl sound an alert and will stare at a snake till it leaves or the dogs come and get it which ever comes first.

Nope we do not kill snake nor eat them but we do love our grasses and veggies

Last week we heard our chickens going crazy and ran out to the coop. We found a rat snake wrapped around our 4 month old Americauna constricting her. I reached in grabbed the ball of chicken and snake. I unwrapped the snake from the pullet and the pullet dropped to the ground and took off and was fine thank God! I don't know how that snake would have eaten the pullet as she is pretty large! I think it would have killed her and then realized she couldn't be eaten. Then we found TWO more near the coop the following week. This is soooo scary and I don't want the pullets to be killed, very stressful for my 12 year old.
