5 weeks ago we got 3 Khaki Campbell's from Jax (from a hatchery). We LOVE these ducklings! They are awesome! 2 are the khaki color (one crested) but one is grey. Now that it's getting feathers, it has a khaki patch on it's chest, but otherwise the feathers are grey, too! How is a khaki Campbell grey?

We've been trying to figure out if they are boys or girls......the uncrested brown one is super chatty and has been quacking, loudly, since she was about 3 weeks old! The crested one has also quacked. The grey one is almost completely silent, hardley ever makes a peep! Even when you pick it up it's quiet! I'm wondering if it's silent nature means it's a boy.....

Here you can see the small khaki patch on it's chest. That's the only khaki spot but makes me think it IS Campbell as opposed to another breed....Maybe it's a khaki Campbell mix?

The upright posture on your grey makes me wonder if it's a runner mix.

I've never seen crested khakis. Kind of cool. As for gender - if they're quacking loudly at that age they're female.

Did you ever find out anymore on why your Khaki Campbell was grey? Did it eventually turn the normal brown/khaki colored? I have 4 Khaki Campbells and THREE of them are grey and the other one is the brown/khaki colored.

Thanks!

Also, what kind of pool is that? Have you had alot of success in keeping it clean?

I don't believe the grey one is a Campbell. He stands taller and is quite a bit thinner than the other ones. The crested one also turned out to be a boy. Thankfully they have been able to live together (1 girl, 2 boys) and not over mate the female. Grey is more aggressive and even chases the (big) dog all around the yard! LOL Grey is still grey and the khaki spot is even smaller now than it was before! He clearly looks like a different breed. Perhaps he is a khaki mix and just got more genes from the other parent.

The pool is just a kiddy pool (like $15 at Walmart). It is impossible to keep clean and has to be emptied and refilled every 3 days or so. We built a small (1000 gallon) pond in our yard and even with a filter going 24/7 it gets disgusting within a few days! We have not found a good system for keeping the water clean.

From what I read on Wikipedia, Khaki Campbells are a cross between Mallard, Rouen and Runner ducks.

And I can't seem to figure out something better for the ducks for a pool. I'm always hoping someone else has figured it out! I just call them little poopers!

I have 3 grey ducklings out of the 4 Khaki Campbells I purchased through our local Agway who gets their poultry from Privett Hatchery in New Mexico. I can't figure out WHY they are grey and if it's normal or NOT normal. And I have 2 BLUE Indian Runner ducklings that are yellow. They are about a month old, so maybe they will TURN blue eventually? Seems odd.
