I have decided to start a thread for our house chicken, Maxine. You may have seen my previous threads about Maxine. She has a massive, non-repairable hernia. She is adjusting to life in the house very well! I did not have my real camera out today, so a cell phone pic will have to do for now. Her diapers arrived in the mail today! She is still adjusting, but I think she will enjoy her pampered life as long as she is not in pain!

Today was my Birthday and one of the best things about it is that we still have Maxie with us!

A few new pics of Maxine. I am not certain she has fully adjusted to wearing her diaper. Yesterday we were gone for much of the day and she stayed in her dog crate. There was not a drop of poop in that crate when we arrived home. I instantly started worrying about whether or not she had a bowel obstruction. When I let Maxine out of the crate she ran to the back door and pooped A TON (sorry for the details)!! Is it possible to potty train a chicken???? She also will not poop in her diaper-- but when I take it off she does the same thing-- runs to the back door and poops by the door on the tile.

Her are a few pictures of Maxine wearing her diaper and lounging in luxury

Feel free to share your house chicken experiences here too!

How sweet! Most people would have culled birds like Maxine...but you are offering her a life that most chickens only dream of! Lap of luxury! I hope she thrives in her new environment and learns how to use her diaper.

Thank you! She is the sweetest girl-- I just could not dream of giving her anything but a chance to be happy.

Next time you go to let her out, instead carry her and set her down outside the back door. You can housetrain her that way. She sounds like she wants to be clean if she doesn't go in her diaper.

Good idea. I will have to try this! Thanks!

So about her hernia, will she still lay eggs and be able to go about normally?
Yes, she is able to lay her eggs and behaving normally. We just are keeping her inside when she can't be supervised so she doesn't eat anything that may obstruct her bowels. Also the rest of the flock except our other EE are rough with her, so we keep a close eye on her.

I was interviewed for a Vermont newspaper today about the chicken diaper that I purchased for Maxine! The article will be published Wednesday! :) I am thinking that a photo of Maxie-girl will make it in the paper too!

Woo hoo! How very cool about the article about your Maxine!

I have a house flock, of sorts. One bona-fide House Silkie, but she has hatched 8 flock eggs back to back. (Her eggs are not fertile as I don't let the roosters in the house. She exercises - now with her chicks - in my fenced garden.)

There are a few chickens which are outside all day with the rest of the flock but they come inside to either lay eggs in an empty brooder bin or sleep at night. One of those is a Silver Sebright, Alice, and she's now gone broody in that bin. Sparkle has her own nest box.

Sparkle hasn't worn her diaper since she went broody, as I didn't want her to bother with it during her confinement. She always ran outside to do the infamous broody-poop, anyway. Then back onto the eggs.

My first House Chicken was a White Crested Black Polish rooster, who was a special needs fella. He had been feather plucked and pecked by other flock members three separate times. He recuperated in the house... He walked in circles a lot, even after I trimmed his crest. Jack was a loving and gorgeous rooster; he wore a black diaper with silver skull-and-crossed-bones pattern.

Aarrggh. My Polish parrot facsimile. He is missed.
