i know it depends mostly on personality but i still want to know what breed will protect my hens but is sweet to people

Buff Orpingtons are supposed to be really nice, but as with any chicken, it really depends on the genes. Ive had some chickens that are supposed to be people friendly, but turned out whacked out. Some breeders dont care about personality.

Right now I ahve a light sussex cockerel that is a very sweet boy. He is very tame and does not mind being petted. Doesnt care for being picked up, but will let me scratch his head. Another rooster I have is a cross between a GLW and a Blue Australorp. Both parents are fairly tame, especially the mother, but the son is a maniac and is scared of people.

In the end, I would say, give a few a try, get them young and raise them up yourself.

All the roosters I ahve had, except one, has been respectful of people. I dont care for a lap dog, but if you want a good roo, he does not need to be a pet, just a protector. As long as he does not attack people, it does not matter if he likes being handled. All he needs to do is take care of your girls.

That is a really hard question to answer. I strongly believe it depends on each individual rooster, sometimes you end up with sweet ones (both to hens and people) or some real nasty ones.

I agree with the other posters, Good roosters are more an individual than a breed. They could be any breed, large or small. If you plan to breed pure breds then you need a rooster of that particular breed- otherwise keep whatever rooster meets your ideals.

So glad to have you with us. I agree with everything other posters have said regarding roosters. Hopefully you can find a kind boy!
