Hen is perpetually broody

Mine stop growling but not brooding within a few days. Day one of the broody buster is the worst, You put them in and you KNOW you have a broody hen! They scream and puff up like monsters and make the biggest fuss imaginable for me. Within a few days they settle down but will go back on the nest if allowed and a few days later they're normally laying again.

Day one in the broody buster usually looks like this for me!

I love this picture! Man, is she one unhappy hen!

Quote: Perma-broodys (lol, good term) often do have huge populations of whatever parasites are going around, simply because they're not looking after themselves. On the nest she's not sun or dust bathing, not scratching to dislodge them, not freeranging and eating vermifuges/pest repellent plants, etc. Only some lice/mites cause feather loss, others can be so bad they kill the bird before you notice any serious feather loss.

The plastic egg always being there is a good way to get less instinctive hens to lay there but more instinctive ones will often either avoid it or claim it, and it could be inciting her hormonally if she is that sort. When I bought in new hens, and checked on the flock at night, I could often hear their beaks clacking as they deloused themselves, so hopefully if her beak grows back she'll do a proper job. Best wishes.
