hardware cloth coop floor

I happened to find a guy on craigslist building coops that are very close to a lot of my thoughts and also very reasonably priced. He told me that there is no floor in the roost at all and that buried 2" wire under the main run (which also runs under the roost area) is the way to go. Though I don't really understand how the chickens are roosting in this set up exactly. I'm going to go see these in person.

I hear you about the metal roof, but they aren't going to be locked up in the hottest part of the day and I'm intending on a good breeze under the metal roof, thus the hardware cloth as a ceiling and then metal roofing raised up over that with lots of breeze space. The problem being the long periods with a lack of breeze, as you know having grown up here.

This is going to be a free range situation where I'll offer feed and water in or near the run. They'll have a large area of horse paddocks and woods to explore all day. I'm picking this first batch of birds for hardiness, all lighter birds. I am planning on Egyptians, Brown Leghorns, and Standard OEGs with some OEG Banties just because I like them. I'm also looking for American Games, but I'm not having a lot of luck finding birds like that which aren't either A) way too expensive for what I'm willing to start with, or B) questionable because I don't know enough about chickens to feel like I'm going to make a good purchase on some "game" hens based on what I can find available locally. I went and looked at some, they were probably fine, but I just don't have anything to compare to.

Anyways, first thing's first: I need to figure out a good coop for my purposes for a fair price, whether I build it or buy something. I'll see what this guy is building before I go forward with what I've drawn up and see what he's doing. It seems to me that the floor is a place where I could make all kinds of bad decisions, so that's why I was asking this here.

I used hardware cloth on a lot of coops, then deep litter on top. I liked it because nothing could dig under to get in and the chickens had no problem walking on shavings.

I've used 1/2" X 1/2 " before. The poop does get hung up sometimes so I had a wirebrush that I used to dislodge it and then sweep it into a pan. I only had 4 hens at the time and they only used the coop to sleep and lay eggs. Otherwise they free ranged. I never saw a problem with their feet and it gave good summer ventilation.
