My first chicken coop and run.

Oh, and about 90% of it is made from recycled materials. :)

I also plan on wrapping the outside of the run with plastic to keep the cold out in the winter. Will also be putting in lighting in the coop and run to encourage egg laying during the cold months.

Coop measures 8' x 4' with a height of 4'
Run measures 9' x 8' with a height of 8'

I don't know where you are, so I cannot offer anything related to weather. There does not appear to be much ventilation inside the coop. Ventilation is important in a chicken coop to eliminate ammonia.

It appears that the only protective fencing is chicken wire. Chicken wire is useful for keeping chickens in, but won't keep predators out. Most any predator can tear through chicken wire with ease.

Traditional guidelines suggest 4 square feet per chicken in the coop, and 10 square feet per chicken in the run. So your coop would hold 8 and the run would accommodate 7 chickens.

You put a lot of hard work into this coop = get some oops paint from lowes or home depot ( if only obnoxious colors try mixing them together and it will be brownish) Painted surfaces will help the wood last longer. I spent $230 on a coop and built second for about the same, with treated wood. Then my husband built two pallet coops out of FREE pallets and being the Thrifty eagle scout he straightened the nails and re used them. Then he got oops paint for $5 that came with a $5 rebate and painted them - yes the obnoxious reddish one is really ugly but......of our 4 coops, the two he built and painted have had less damage than the two I spent a lot of money building. I painted them a year or so later but really it was telling what a little paint would do to prevent damage.



So for the money Free is good but protect what is good with a little paint and make it last!

My wife wanted to paint it but I decided not to. I should of done it though. I will look for that paint and paint it. Thanks for the suggestion.

You are right, I put a lot of blood sweat and time into this piece. I know it's not the best looking thing but I like it and so do my chickens. :)

THAT'S even better! Looks great and I love the top one and that double decker nesting area.
