What time of day to chickens usually lay? I have heard early morning and others have said it depends on the chicken. Any ideas as I am new to raising chickens and am not sure.

I don't know about every chicken, but mine are usually done laying by 10 am. My pullets are still a little wacky and I will get an afternoon egg every now and then, but mostly all my eggs come in the morning.
All of my birds are evening layers. They usually don't lay until near dusk.
mine lay all day...
We have three original freerange hens that, for some reason, a few months ago started wandering into the garage and laying ontop of boxes. So, we put a little lay box in there, and since then, they have been laying in the garage. My point is, that sometimes they race right out of the house in the morning and all three try to lay at the same time in one box....Other times they take all day, or dont lay at all. I see them alot more since they come in the garage,and have been paying attention to them, and I cant figure out any sort of pattern. It always changes.

Should I leave them in coop until 10:00 a.m. ? They are about 23 weeks old and haven't started laying yet.
Why? They won't lay until they are ready - locking them in the coop won't cause them to lay. If your lay boxes are in the coop, they will go into them to lay regardless of the time of day - assuming they have access to the coop. Of course, if they're free-range, that's a whole different can of worms.
Unless there's another reason you want to keep them in, which wasn't apparent to me reading your initial question.

Sometimes when hens start laying people will keep their hens locked in the coop for at least a few days to teach the hens that they should lay eggs in the nest boxes. But that is only if your hens weren't laying in the nest boxes.
Hopefully when your hens start laying they will lay in the nest boxes.
What breed or breeds are your hens? How many do you have?
My RIR is about 24 wks old and has started to "squat." She squawked and ran to the coop, where I found her panting and situating the hay in her nesting box. She has been in the coop for 15 min now, and no egg. This will be her first egg. How long should it take a "first timer" before becoming concerned ?
