Tapeworms in chickens?? Natural cure?

Hello Ya'll

our Barncats have Tapeworms! UGH!!

Since my better half really does not want to use any kind of chemicals, what could I use to deworm the chickens?

I assume that the chickens will get the worms too?

Does anybody have a natural remedy??

no not the cats, since we don't plan on either eating the cats or their products...

I should have made myself more clear, sorry. We don't want to use chemicals on the Chickens because we eat their eggs and we are planning on eating some of the chickens too.




and Kathy: well, i don't appreciate the sarcasm. after all a forum like this is supposed to help people and not make fun of them and I did not realize that people who don't want to use Chemicals all the time are targets to get laughed at??!!

Tapeworms in cats are fairly easy to get rid of when treated with droncit or drontal. Tapeworms in chickens are very difficult to get rid of in chickens; I've dealt with them many times. It would be better using a chemical to get rid of tapes in chickens, preferably a product similar to droncit (praziquantel) found in zimectrin gold equine paste wormer.

Here's what tapeworm segments look like in chicken feces, then you'll know for sure if your birds have them:

I have outside cats who occasionally get tapeworm from eating moles they dig up in my yard. I treat them in winter when they come in at night since I don' t like finding the little rice-like tapes they leave where they sleep. My vet says he honestly does not fool with treating his barn cats because they will keep getting it. I wouldn't worry about your chickens getting them because you can usually spot it in their droppings. Many people on here that don't use a lot of chemicals will use garlic powder, red cayenne pepper, and oregano in the feed once a week. I have given mine this combination (sometimes without the oregano) in yogurt or moistened chicken feed, and they eat till it's gone. I think the pepper is the ingredient that helps. Honestly though, if your chickens get a large worm load or tapeworm you probably ought to use Valbazen or you could lose them. Many of us don't like medication unless unless it is necessary.

Sorry, dawg just caught me at the wrong moment. So let's just think about it... if there was a natural way to effectively treat worms in poultry, it would probably also work in mammals, so people would probably choose that method for their pets, right? As far as I know, the only 100% effective treatment of internal parasites in both birds and mammals is with chemical de-wormers.

do you have a certain dose that you use, or just a little of this and a little of that?

Do you use more of one than the other?

we have 30 some chickens.

I have 50 chickens, and I will take around 2 ounces of each, and mix it evenly in the yogurt or wet feed. Then I spread it around in about 5 pans to which they all dive itno. You have to get out of the way quick though LOL. Many people prefer the fresh garlic, but it is kind of pricey, so I use powder. The powdered cayenne is fine though.
