Just to be fair, it should be pointed out that Privett Hatchery, in NM had an outbreak in August 2013 that affected more than 300 people. No place is immune. I'm sure there are others out there that I didn't go far enough to find. Frankly, as we continue to raise and keep animals in less than natural ways we will continue to have issues come up. I'm not saying we shouldn't have hatcheries. I am just saying that as we have "progressed" to the point that we are shipping day old chickens in the mail and consider this to be the norm, we pay the price for our distance from nature. Heck, that is one of the reasons I got the chickens to begin with. The thought of factory farms sickens me. I bought eggs at the farmers market on Saturday and chose to buy them from the young man who could tell me where the eggs were from, what the birds were fed and that not one of the 6 farms he used had more than 300 birds. I paid more for them and didn't mind a bit. BTW, the eggs were so incredible I just can't wait til my girls start laying. Now, if only I can get rid of the doggine weasel.

You raise a valid concern about people who seem to decide to beat up on specific companies for some unknown gain. With regard to this thread, however, it has been on the news all day today and can also be found in a few newspapers that Mt. Healthy Hatchery has, for the third time in three years, had chicks directly connected to an outbreak of salmonella. I initially sort of dismiss most posts which lambaste a specific company - no way to know whether the complaints are legitimate or sour grapes. But in the case of this report, it is true and verified by the Centers for Disease Control. Mt. Healthy Hatchery is the only company this poster is talking about because Mt. Healthy Hatchery is the only one linked to this years outbreak.

As the grandmother of a 2 1/2 year old with serious medical issues, and owning 22 chickens I bought in February from a mail order hatchery, I do care, very much, that there is a direct link between poultry ordered from this company and a salmonella outbreak. I also understand your concerns, and have felt the same way myself when I see repeated company bashing - IF there is no valid reason for posting anything negative.

I will agree that as any company grows too rapidly it becomes harder to get trained, competent personnel with a good work ethic. Bar in mind also that the reason for that growth is the number of us out here starting our backyard flocks. We should try not to demonize the companies that are trying to provide us with the means to do this. O ur store training was very specific in prohibiting us from allowing customers to handle the birds. We also had posted information advising buyers not to let small children or individuals with a compromised immune system to handle poultry. In spite of all this, one of my people persisted in kissing the chicks and rarely if ever used the hand sanitizer after handling them. I, on the other hand, thought I'd be left with nothing but bones from the wrist down because the stuff years my skin up, and there doesn't seem to be enough hand cream on the planet to fix it.

I got around 70 chicks of 7 different breeds from Mt Healthy this spring. Have lost only one chick in a month and half. I have immune system problems due to RA and I have stayed healthy and been very happy with the quailty of the chicks. Mt Healthy is a very good hatchery as far as hatcheries.
