I have a chicken who is about 7 months old and she has Sour Crop, I have been treating her with homeopathic Nux Vomica since yesterday (which has helped) and have been emptying her crop today, but not sure if I should give the Nystatin now or wait and see if she clears it herself.

This is Clawdene in the profile pic, I guess I need moral support more than anything! We really love our chickens!

Started her on the Nystatin today so we will see, she is bright and alert and hydrated.

From what I have read, Nystatin is the best med for it. Sour crop is difficult to treat, and often is accompanied by other illnesses at the same time. Don't feed her heavy foods for a couple of days, just some egg, applesauce, and yogurt, but no grains.

Thanks for the reply, and yes have her inside and she is eating those foods, plus a few blackberries, she is on the Nystatin now, she didn't like the yogurt though so am going to get some probiotics. I hope she makes it...

She was not doing so well even with the Nystatin and probiotics, and everything else. But on Monday I had ordered the Crop Bound capsules as a back up and they came today, and she had one and really is better, waiting to see if it holds or not. Last night had to empty her crop at 9, 4 AM and 7 AM and since I gave the capsule at 8 AM I have not had to so far, I hope it works.

I have dealt with this and my hen survived it. It was about a month trying to save her. The Nystatin caused severe diahhrea with my hen. I used clotrimazole vaginal cream with success. Yogurt also caused sever diahhrea. What i did was feed my hen her feed all softened by hot water, making it mushy. I feed her small amounts about three times a day. In the morning i found the best time to empty her crop. Massaged her crop a few times in the day. What does her poo look like. If she is passing it, thats great. I had sever to green and watery poop. We got through it, its very stressful. Lots of water. I even gave her garlic in her water for about 24 hrs. I find the best is sometimes not to do to much. Give their systems a bit of a break. This can be successfull.

Here is an old post of mine and another lady that has gone through this.

Can you tell us what the ingredients are in the capsules. That is great that it has helped.

Hi there she is holding her own, but not 100% by any means, the capsules are definitely helping and contain Senna, Molasses, Docusate, Sennosides according to the website. I have added in Grapefruit Seed Extract to see if that helps, she is eating and pooping but still filling up and needing to have her crop emptied, just did it once today though. She is much perkier and becoming quite the house pet! I did put her in with the other chickens but then today I realized she ate some straw and so will have to keep her separated longer. Hope she pulls through...

The kefir did cause diarrhea, yesterday her poops were excellent but today she has diarrhea again, she is pooping and things are coming through, like when I gave her some blackberries, but not the straw and parsley stalks. She will eat the garlic and have given her some, trying to limit things to what she will eat as she is resisting anything by mouth (except homeopathic pellets which she takes and eats! LOL) I am not sure hers is fungal as she did not improve on the Nystatin, but I gave her some Amoxicillin and she did, but I did the Grapefruit Seed Extract 1 drop in her water twice a day as it treats both, she actually drinks it!

I am feeding her chick food and lots of water and she seems to be handling it well.

She seems to be enjoying bed-time stories too! LOL (When I read to my daughter - am not yet reading to the chickens...)

I have a very mean parrot, I am so glad his crop has not done this...!

I might need to get a crop bra for her too, or make one, did anyone else need to use one? I have been reading the other threads, thanks!

The Nystatin i don't feel help my hen, it was the Clotrimazole vaginal cream that i feel helped. When i emptied her crop in the morning, i would give her the cream and massage it in her crop to try to spread it around, then gave the cream at night and massaged it again. Also when i feed her i would wait about 20 min to feed her.

Never needed the bra fortunately. Hopefully when your hen comes around, she might not need one.

It sounds like she is coming around and she is very loved. :) They have that affect on us.
