Weird squawking noise. Problem?

I have one chicken who sometimes makes a very high-pitched squawking sound. If I had to guess what sound a chicken makes when she is hoarse, I would guess something like that.

If I had to compare it to something, it reminds me of the turkey calls my uncles used to have--the kind where you scrape two pieces of wood together.

I have heard this sound off and on for a while (probably as long as this chicken has grown out of peeping.) But I was just this weekend able to figure out which chicken it was. And it is possible, this is the only sound she has ever made. She is a 10 month old ancona that I got from Ideal last year. She seems fine, otherwise.

Could this be serious?

My grandfather had a laying hen they called turkey because she made a weird high pitched gobbling sound. She was fine, lived to a ripe old age.
 
She is probably "singing". When our hens are happy and relaxed, ie, laying in the sun, all is quiet, they will sing...it is sort of a hoarse, trilling noise, and means just that, they are happy

They make a similar noise...a sort of eeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr noise....when they hear something strange. Our roosters will make this noise, too, when they hear something strange, but they don't sing when they're happy, just crow.

I just wanted to be sure there wasn't some horrible respiratory disease that manifested with that 'nails on the blackboard' squawking.

I have an EE hen that makes the most god awful noises till she and everyone is done laying for the day. She has been a little under the weather this week so she has been quiet more then normal, thou i feel bad for her , its been nice and quiet LOL SHe was feeling better today so I expect her to resume the raptor noises and my neighbors will once again think that I have Jrassic Park experiment under way.
 
Does this hen usually make the noise in the morning? Do you have a rooster in your flock? I am just wondering if it's one of those cases where a hen takes on the role of a rooster and starts to crow.
 
Oh, good point, Donna. I never even thought of that. I dont' have a rooster.
I think she is probably doing it throughout the day, but I can't remember. I don't get to spend a lot of time with them except on the weekends. I will pay attention to that next time.

My Austrolaup girls do this too and i'm worried about what the neighbours think as well. Usually i'll pop my head out the window and the one squawking will shut up but sometimes it doesn't work. Interesting to think that it's a signal that they have layed the quota of eggs for the day as that may indeed be what mine are doing as it is never clockwork. Sometimes they squawk in the morning or the afternoon. Mine are pretty happy too but it always happens when at least one is in the box laying.
