Scratch

Hey Patywac3,
I have read (& confirmed from my bird vet), that parakeets & other birds are lactose intolerant, hence the comment. However, it seems that chickens are the garbage collectors (adorable as they are) and compose alternative and probably can tolerate most things.

Chickens like some other birds are not 100% lactose intolerant..
Chicks have the ability to process some milk sugars better than others.

I have two hens that will be a year old in August I mix cracked corn with their layer and really all I see them eat is the corn. They really don't like the layer unless I mix it with a little water just to moisten it a little. And they go crazy over it

I feed eggs to my hens, nothing better then egg protein for any one, but never feed them a whole egg, so they wont make the connection back to the eggs they lay, most people dont realize chickens are very smart beings ..! and once they see something they will make a connection, i feed hard boil eggs all mashed up, & feel the addition of egg protein has made my hens healthier in the long run , been feeding egg since they were young, & I plan to keep all my beautiful girls for as long as possible , 7 to 11` years, and back in the 1970's most of my hens lived to at least 10 years , so starting when they are young would be best but what ever time you start ,feeding mashed up egg wont lead them to egg eating, i assure you . they have to see it to know it, so no worries with that.

OH and by the way the chickens will eat anything lol. The funniest thing i have seen and wish i had a video was my jack russell Lucy buried half of a sausage in our garden and my Red Hampshire found it and there was a RUGBY scrum by the other 3 birds chasing her trying to get it off her lol, it was hysterically funny, the winner was my big Muran Pepper who rugby tackled off Matilda (my Red Hempshire), and ran like the wind was under her tail and hid behind the chicken coop to eat it lol. Poor Lucy she did go out in the morning looking for her sausage but it was no where to be found lol.
Hilarious! LOVE the rugby scrum analogy!

Help! My girls are not eating the corn in their scratch, I sweep it up and toss it. I recently changed their food, I noticed that the new food is corn heavy, it looks like corn meal. I am thinking that is why they are not eating the scratch, is they have enough of corn. I have been thinking of just adding regular winter bird feed to the scratch or instead of the scratch. I have that with out the corn.
