Several (myself included) have talked about how to set up a feed/water station in a brooder to help minimize mess. While browsing through my local OSH/Lowe's, I took a look at some of their plastic totes and found this gem:

It's a Rubbermaid product. The top comes off like a regular plastic tote bin, but the real benefit for duck brooders is the fold-down front door. It makes an ideal ramp up into the feed/water area. and it's about an inch deep inside, meaning it catches all the spill-over. I got the large size, which fits perfectly inside the 5-foot galvanized tub I'm using to brood. The best part was that there was zero construction/modification involved. It truly was a ready-made solution.

The one I picked up was $13.

It really was way easy. Talk about stumbling on a perfect solution! The only drawback I saw is that all the containers are the same width. The small container is just shorter than the large one. As long as your brooder is wide enough to accommodate, it's ideal. And I was totally thinking of your post when I was looking for a bin to use!

If someone were good at fabricating something, this might be a modest opportunity for a side business. Folks sell harnesses and aprons and shoes, why not watering stations. While we are at it, why not head washers? Oh, can you picture a little ducky shower stall?

Must be low blood sugar. Ahem. I am usually more serious.

I;d love to see this "in action" i have seen similar totes here... will be tricky to lift up i would guess??(when full of water i mean lol)

that would be a good one A, it would have to have a shower curtain for those more modest duckies though.

GentFarmer, I hope my silliness was not too off-putting. I think it has been a long winter here. Already. And I am delighted you found those - I am already sending other members to this thread to take a look.

I can't imagine it would be. I lined the bottom with a towel atop shavings, so most water is soaked up. It's not large or heavy. I just put food/water in their respective containers inside the bin. Easy peasy.
