Hey, just wondering about chukar. Are they easy to tame? Can they free run in the yard if you do manage to tame them? How are they in the winter?

No, chukars can never be free ranged in the yard, they are hard fast fliers and you'll never get them back if they get out. Even if you cut their wings they can outrun you on the ground. They are nervous birds who want nothing more than you to go away where they can't see you. They aren't birds you're going to tame either they have too many of their instincts intact. During the off season you can keep them in a covey but during breeding season they MUST be paired off. They are difficult to raise to say the least. They will kill each other in the brooder for little or no reason, and the same goes for out in the coop. Chukars are murderers when it comes right down to it. If they don't like another bird or anything in the cage for that matter in the cage they just start killing each other. They're good at it too. Do your research on them and give them a lot of space like 5 sq feet per bird and you should be ok. They are nothing like chickens or quail and retain most of their wild instincts. They are one of the more wild gamebirds to raise. UC Davis has some reasonable research papers on chukars that you can find on google.
