We are a micro farm in SE Massachusetts and just finished an awesome weekend! The second grade class came over to gather the eggs that they will start incubating on Thursday. We were going to have a traditional field trip (school bus, during the week, etc) but decided it would be more fun to do this on the weekend and include the students and their families. We had a great turnout with 50+ families showing up. We did not charge the school for the event but we got a lot of publicity!!! We chipped in and paid a face painter to come by ($75/ hour) but that was the only extravagance. Other than that, it was a matter of setting plenty of eggs in the nesting boxes so the kids could get them, letting the kids hold some of our week-old chicks and feed the adult birds. The kids HAD A BLAST, some did not even want to leave!

We are also donating an incubator and fertile eggs (not really the ones that were gathered by the kids in case they were shaken too much)! If any of you have the opportunity, I highly recommend reaching out to a local elementary school and see if you can get involved. The kids will have a blast and you might too!

Years ago a second grade class came to my farm. I tried to keep an eye on things and so did their teacher, but with 20 or so active little kids it's hard. While the group was looking at the turkeys I turned around to see one that little boy had crawled under the fence into a pen with a mature Alpine buck goat named Troubleshooter. He had his arms around Troubleshooter's neck and was giving him a big hug. Now Troubleshooter was very gentle and he loved people and attention. But he was a buck and he smelled like one. I have no idea what that little boy's mother thought when he got home. The little boy was thrilled. He got to hug a goat. Highlight of his day. Just wish he had picked one of the does......

The publicity was great! Several parents mentioned that they were considering raising chickens but just didn't know where to start. After seeing us doing it they were more confident. We probably will end up with three or four new customers (plus a bunch of Facebook friends).

Cassie - I am rofl when I picture that kid walking in the front door after school with a huge smile on his face and his mom wondering what I'm the @$!# is that smell?!?! Having the event on the weekend certainly helped. This way the parents came with their kids. So instead of three or four chaperones for all the kids, we had two chaperones per kid ;)
