How to Free Range Ducks

I have a small pound and want to free range some ducks. What ducks do well getting away for predators? Unfortunately they will not ship ducks Florida. which is the breed i want.

I think Pekins are the only ducks that are legal to own in Florida? But there are tons of Muscovy that need safe homes. They really do make great ducks for a homestead.

I totally free range but the thing I said that I fear, a predator attack, happened 2 days ago. My neighbors dog snapped its chain. I posted about it in a different thread. I have found 11 chickens dead, one, duck, and one goose died later. I am now rethinking my free range strategy. The ducks survived the attack amazingly well. The only duck that died was a one week old duckling that died of fright. My recall worked. I just wish I had realized the dog was out there sooner.:hit
I'm so sorry...

I got my first ducks in late July/early August. After they had their feathers I began to free range them on my pond (3/4 acre) and 5 acres with no fencing. They have never left the property and stay right near the pond. Its never been a problem to get them to go back into the barn until the past few weeks. They typically go to bed at dusk. Some night its not problem but now it seems that the difficult nights are becoming more frequent. There are 16 ducks (5 khakis and 11 muscovys) and they have almost 100sq ft in the barn with straw betting, food and water each night. I give them meal worms as a treat each night when they come in. They forage all day and I only feed them in the barn at night. They are eating less and less each night so they seem to be getting plenty to eat outside. Just got the first egg each day over the last three days.

Any suggestions on "retraining them to go to bed"? They used to come pretty well when called.
