Hi all! I was hoping to become a new chicken mommy and called our local town to see if there are any rules for this. I spoke to a inspector who told me some of my town (town of Evans ny) is allowed and some is not. My location I am not. When I expressed how dissappinted I was he told me I wasn't the only person and he was thinking about bringing it up to the zoning committee. He took my name and number and said he would call if he needed me to speak. My thought was this. Do I go ahead and speak at a town board meeting and if so what do I say? There are towns all around me that allow it. If I wait for this inspector can I even trust he will go ahead? I thank u all for responses as this is the first time I'll be even going to a town hall meeting lol

Do as much research as you can on your own. Investigate what the other areas have for ordinances and how they have worked so far. Get names of people you talk to. Record everything they say, including if they have had any complaints, how long the law has been there, etc.

Also do a web search for backyard chicken myth vs fact. You'll get a lot of search results. Read them all. This info will dispel the myths that nearly everyone opposed to urban chickens use as their reasoning for not wanting them. Research, research, research. What you want to be able to do is answer any question someone might ask you about the subject.

Find other people in your shoes. The more people you have to support the cause, the better your chances are with the town members you'll be speaking too. Call or stop by your local town representatives and bring up the topic. Feel them out.

Follow up with the inspector after a few weeks. Make sure you keep him on your side no matter what. That means even if he took no further action despite telling you he would, be polite with him. Tell him you have done your homework and will talk to the town yourself, and that you would love his support.

I'm currently doing this myself. I am on my city's council meeting agenda this coming Tuesday. Good luck!
