When Do Hens Start Laying?/Share Your Laying Experiences

I got my first egg today, not sure who did it but my oldest hen is 4-1/2 months old. I know this is very early but I'll take it.

I got my first egg a few days ago, everyone! It was laid by my beautiful Beatrice and was just snuggled in the corner of their small outside area.
I'm so excited. I'll try and get a photo for you guys, it's still in my fridge!

Mine were about 5 months when they started laying. I actually new within a couple days that they were going to start laying. Their behavior changed when I came near them. They would crouch down and stick their bums up at me so I figured they were maturing at that point. They still do this to me, lol. I just give them a little pet and then they go on their way. It's very exciting when they start laying! Congrats to Beatrice!

Thanks! She was around 21 weeks when we first found the egg. I got one today and it was very soft, as well as white with brown speckles unlike her usual very brown ones. Do you know if this is because she doesn't get enough calcium?

I don't know if it's from lack of calcium or not. If in doubt, you can always offer some oyster shell for calcium. I did get a really soft egg once but it was really early on and it was the only one.

They should always have calcium available separate from the food once they start laying (most people here use oyster shell). They will self regulate just as they do with grit. The soft shell thing just happens sometimes. I wouldn't worry about it unless it is consistent.
