Hello everyone,

First let me say I think what you guys do is awesome! I would love to raise my own chickens, but unfortunately, I'm pretty sure my condo association won't allow it :).

My name is Scott and I am an iOS app developer. I am posting this because I realized that, as far as I know, there are no apps to help manage raising chickens. My question for you is, do you think there is a value in an app that would help you manage your chicken coop and provide useful tips for beginners?

Now I apologize in advance, I don't personally know the first thing about raising chickens and this may be a really dumb idea. I just think that what you guys do is really cool and I was wondering if you thought there was an opportunity to provide useful technology to your community.

Thanks!

Scott

I don't do chickens, but I'm getting my first ducks in a week. I have bought books started an account on backyard chickens and have been looking up info almost daily to make sure I know all I need to. I think an app for chickens and for ducks would be great. It could tell you what food needs to be feed ever stage and could alert you when they are moving to the next stage and need different feed. Help you keep track of eggs laid so you have it on your phone what months you don't get much, then you don't have to give them the same feed those months. You could see patterns and track patterns and maybe the app could even show where close to you sells the kind of food you need? Makes since to me! I've spent quiet a bit on books! And plenty of time on research! Why not have an app too?

I'm glad that you think this would be a good idea! I think I am going to develop this! What I need now is someone who is experienced in raising chickens to guide me through the process of designing the app.

Would anyone like to partner with me?

Another app that might be interesting to do, but contains a hardware component, is an incubator monitoring device. Someway to monitor your incubator with your smart phone; however, I'm a techie myself, so you may want to validate the concept with others.

That's a great idea! Record keeping is essential for keeping chickens, at least for me, so an app would make it much mor convenient for those who aren't really tech savvy. I'm sure there are plenty of backyard chickeners that would agree!

I agree. As a beginer I can't say how helpful one source of info would be. I myself have spent countless hours doing research. Deciding what if any certain breeds I wanted to work with, what I needed to start with, local wisdom. And a calendar of some type would definitely be an advantage.

If you want someone in person to ask questions to or to try the app out and give you suggestions while developing you might want to try your local feed store. We were suggested to a woman at are local feed store who knows tons about ducks and chickens. We've been back and talked to her multiple times while getting ready for are ducklings! Just a suggestion!

Yes, please develop an app for beginner to moderate that has a day counter and with notification options, breed picking, when to change feed types etc.
