Our cochin rooster and our golden sexlink hen both have feather loss on their vents. None of the other hens have feather loss. The question is do we have mites or lice and if we do is it ok to dust our coop when we have hens that are setting? The one hens eggs are due to hatch. And the other is still 2 weeks away. We don't want to disturb them because we're afraid that they will abandon their eggs. Will the sevin damage the unhatched eggs?

You should be able to see mites or lice on the birds if they have them, though sometimes it can be tricky! If you part the feathers, you will see small, brown things moving around. You may even see white eggs around the shafts of the feathers.

Treatment is super easy though. You can simply put Sevin dust in a plastic bag, and stick the chicken in it with their heads sticking out. Then just "shake and bake".

I think it should be fine to dust around the hens, but if you are worried about it, you can wait the two weeks as long as your roosters don't start showing signs of illness or anemia (lethargic, puffed up, not eating/drinking).
