I'm extremely scared for my chicks! I have six 7 week old Tetra Tint pullets that I bought from TSC.
I figured since I'll be moving them out of the house in a few weeks, I'll bring them on occasional field trips outside to the chicken run during the week. I've been bringing them out every three days or so and so far the older hens have been nice to them and I'm fine with them interacting with each other, but that's not the problem. I sit outside and watch the pullets run around, but after a while of them eating stuff from the ground, I noticed they're only eating the dirt

! For some reason the pullets have a big interest in eating the dirt only, so I got them water to drink so hopefully they could wash it down and everything would be fine. They drank the water without any issues at all, and then I picked one up and felt something that felt like a squishy lump on her chest. I felt it a little more and it felt like a balloon full of sand, so I checked the other pullets and it's the same with them. I'm worried that something might go wrong with them since there felt like there was a lot of dirt in there. I just brought them inside because I couldn't stop them from eating the dirt, and now I'm just trying to make sure if this is normal or should I be worried??? They're pretty quiet right now and I've checked on them, but they seem fine. They're not showing any signs of discomfort but I'm wondering if it'll happen later?

They are fine. It's their crop. It is where their food goes when they eat. It's slightly to the right side, correct? I was weirded out the first time I found this weird "lump" on my chicken too.

Oh thank god! I thought there was going to be a freaky dirt build up! I was worried they'd die overnight of a clogged throat or something.. Thank you, you just saved me a night of restful sleep.

You are very welcome!! I had chickens about 10 years ago as an AG project and didn't remember them having that. I got my girls when they were 8 weeks and thought it felt gross lol. Then when one of my baby chicks had it it looked like a deformity lol. Especially because it stretched the skin and so it was bare of some fluff in some spots. Their skin is so translucent that I could see the food. It's definitely weird and gross even but completely 100% normal.
