Duck food for Serama chicks?

I just got two Serama babies, one days old and fuzzy, the other has feathered wings, at a critter sale on the weekend. I have no chickens now so I've been grinding the unmedicated duck grower I have as feed for them. I also have available to me alfalfa pellets and wild bird seed (that I add lentils to for my pigeons). Must I purchase a monstrous bag of chick food for these two teeny birds or will something that I have be adequate?

I honestly do not know the answer for you, however I will say that when I purchased my chicks today I was able to find a small, (5lb ish) sized bag of chick grower for about 4 bucks. I imagine that you should be able to also find smaller bags at your local feed store. Good luck!

They will love the duck food. If that's what you've got, feed it. Waste not, want not.

My chickens never get chick feed or layer feed. They are always kept on gamebird feed (very similar to waterfowl feed) and they get a bowl of oyster shell on the side. I keep Silkies, which are not fantastic layers, so too much calcium can actually be detrimental to them, the same can be said for you Seremas. Ornamental breeds aren't known for their egg laying abilities. I also usually have small chicks running around, the game bird feed solves the issue of keeping my adults out of the chicks food and the chicks out of the adult food.

Good luck!
