Hi ,
i have a year old hen that laid an egg yesterday and was fine, and today she was acting slow and not her self so i looked at her vent and she has some soft egg shell hanging out and she is pooping out yolk and egg white material .... help what can i do to help her???!!! PLEASE HELP

thank you

Gently pull the soft shell out of the vent, and flush the vent out with a small amount of weak vinegar solution to help prevent an infection. Egg yolk peritonitis can result late on from events like this. Make sure she is taking some calcium in egg shells or crushed oyster shell.

She may be showing the first sighns of becoming an internal layer I whould also make sure I got everything out of her the soft egg shell ect and flush her with the vinegar solution using a clean suringe. Watch her carefully if you notice her acting different sickly and kinda off to her self and not active imediatly take her into an avian vet if you caint do this then start treating with some potent antibiotics because when something like this happens its almost always resulting in a serious peritonitis infection and this needs treatment imediatley or its fatal.also if you take her in to be seen you can ask to get an implant desorelin put in her to stop her laying cycle good luck

ok mild vinegar solution sounds good, what type of antibiotics should put her on? I have tylan 50 and oxytetracycline powder.

I also read to put a mixture of warm honey and ky jelly in and around her vent, what do you think ?

No honey that could go rancid I whould just use the ky jelly.best to use penecilan or baytril but tylan whould be okay also don't think the other antibiotic whould be strong enough the okytetracyclin. Better use one the stronger antibiotics maybe even penecillan g or ask what they have usually ecoli is the culprit when a hen gets peritonitis but this is a very painfull infection that causes sever internal inflamation and pain also it spreads to the internal organs like the liver repoductive and digestive tract don't let this happen if she dosent respond to home treatment take her in and they will most likely give her metacam for reducing inflamation and its also a good pain killer and she will get a good strong antibiotic as well because sometimes its hard to get certain antibiotics yourself let me know how she's doing watch her for a few days

PLEASE Help , anyone else that as gone through this, please let me know what you did and if it worked !!!!

No you should not use this. Could you just go buy a new bottle of it? Then giving her this whould defenetly work.and then the real danger is if she continues to lay thease eggs. I know of people will say to increase the calcium but unfortunetly it isint always that simple sometimes after an ilness like bronchitis or mycoplazma or any kind of resperatory disease the shell gland which produces the shell on the egg can get damaged or infected and then it malfunctions sometimes all it takes is to give the hen an antibiotic like the above mentioned but you have to use fresh antibiotic that isint expired because that could cause it to work halfway and create penecillin resistant bacterial this is already happening in some cases. What you must do is ask yourself how much you care to do for this hen because you may have to start spending considerable money. I can't even begin to tell you how much it cost me to treat my hen for this problem but she's my pet so that's what I mean you have to think about what you can do. It could be as simple as giving her this penecilin g. Let me know

I would use expired antibiotics (under a year) if that was all I had, but I probably would not medicate for infection at this point, just use the flush.

ok so this morning she passed the rest of the soft shell (unless its a new one) she is still acting off. She sits down on the bathroom floor and sorta walks on her legs, clearly uncomfortable on her abdomen. I'll flush her again this morning :( i think I'll use the the pencillin g, thats all i have for now, even if its at a weakened state its better then nothing until I can get new stuff. I think
i many days should i flush for ?? and how many days of penicillin g ?
